- Pinch and a punch for the first of the month...and the National Minimum Wage goes up 12p, making it now £6.31 an hour. Government campaign to let people know goes full force.

Times Higher Education publishes world's university rankings.
- It's National Poetry Day. The theme this year is water, inspired by Coleridge's mariner's famous cry: "Water, water, everywhere"?. Expect poetry readings, launches, prizes and performances.
London Restaurant Festival also begins, running until 21st
October. It promises to 'lift the lid on London's finest cooking' with over 800 restaurants taking part and Gizzi Erskine fronting it. We love Gizzi.
- World Animal Day to celebrate animal
life in all its forms. Special events planned in locations all over the globe. And lots of cute pictures on social media, no doubt.
